Dan Hecho
Dan Hecho is a renowned photographer based in Kiev, Ukraine. His body of work focuses on creating photographs that closely resemble classical art paintings.
Hecho grew up in Sumy, Ukraine and attended a high technical university as well as an art painting school. He began his photographic career at thirty-seven. Since 2007 he has created fine art photographs for commercial means and for personal creative projects. In addition, he worked as a wedding photographer from 2007 to 2015.
His photographs take inspiration from classical art paintings, specifically Renaissance oil paintings. Their influence is evident through Hecho's use of intense light and pronounced shadows. Similar characteristics used in classicism to maximize the depth in an image. Harmony, balance, and sense of proportion are present in the composition of his images. Images that highlight the build and often athletic characteristics of the human body. Furthermore, his work focuses on capturing a distinct vision of color, light, and performance. Much like the school of thought of classical times, Hecho considers the naked female body, one of the most beautiful things found in nature. Moreover, he has self-described that nothing more beautiful exists than the nude form. Aside from nude photography he also does ballet dance photography, capturing the beauty of the female form in movement.
Dan Hecho’s creative process consists of having an open mind and improvising along the way. A typical day in the studio for him usually consists of shooting for two hours with his Pentax 645z and using the available daylight. He prefers to work with the natural light rather than using additional equipment. After he has finished the photographing portion of his work, he moves on to digital editing. He uses color correction software to achieve the peculiar characteristics of his photographs that emulate oil on canvas compositions.
As an accomplished photographer, the images Dan Hecho creates have displayed in solo exhibitions in Kiev in 2012 and 2014. Some of his other achievements include placing first in the International Competition of Wedding Pictures, ASFO in 2009, and in the Russian National Photo Award in 2011. He also medaled in the same competition in 2013. In addition, he has placed first and been a finalist several times at the International Prize PhotoShoot Awards in the conceptual, academic nudes, duet, nude in fashion, and intimate categories in 2013, 2014, and 2015. Furthermore, he served on the jury panel for the nude category in the PhotoShoot Awards in 2017, 2018, and 2019. He also served as a juror for the German Association of Photographers competition in 2014 and 2016.
Aside from being a photographer, Dan Hecho conducts photography workshops, master classes, lectures, and photo school lessons around the world. Since 2010, he actively has taught within the field of photography focusing on styles such as fine art, fashion, and portraiture. Furthermore, his classes also cover post-processing and color correction processes in photo editors like Lightroom and Photoshop. In addition, he developed a training video accessible for those who cannot attend his workshops to instead partake in distance learning. Hecho has trained over two-thousand people worldwide and helped them improve their photography skill significantly.
